Contravening A Traffic Signal

The offence of contravening a traffic signal is commonly a 3 point offence with the Court?s discretion to disqualify. If you already have 9 points on your licence or are a new driver, you will face the prospect of a driving ban through totting up points if you are found guilty of this offence.

What is classed as a Traffic signal?

The most common answer would be traffic lights (which are covered by this offence) but of course this fails to cover the multitude of signs present on the road and signage.

The following also fall under the ?traffic signal? category and are punishable by this offence:

  • Stop,
  • Give way,
  • One way,
  • No right turn,
  • Keep left,
  • On the road markings such as double white lines, zigzag lines or a box junction.

Totting up points through offences such as contravening a traffic signal can result in a mandatory disqualification which can have a huge negative impact on your working and home life.
